Introdotte da uno spettacolo di Bunraku (marionette) al Teatro Nazionale di Tokyo, tre tragiche storie di amore e abbandono: a) due giovani amanti per sempre legati da una corda rossa; b) un vecchio e malato capo della yakuza torna sulla panchina dove una donna da lui abbandonata l'ha atteso per tutta la vita; c) un giovane fan di una famosa pop star si acceca quando lei rimane sfigurata in un incidente. Associato al giuoco infantile, il tema della marionetta è centrale nel cinema tragicomico di Kitano: lo diventa l'uomo, vittima delle proprie ambizioni e lo diventa la donna, vittima dell'uomo.
